The Jackson County Floridan has an interview with Michael Shelfer, whose work is featured in Volume 5 of Tokyopop’s Rising Stars of Manga series. It took about five years of serious work for Shelfer, who is 24, to get noticed.

His entry in the 5th Rising Stars of Manga competition won the People’s Choice award and is included in the 5th volume of the Rising Stars series. Winning the People’s Choice meant a lot to me, maybe more than if it had been judged by staff, but the editor told me that he wanted it in, anyway, so that was good, too. They’re giving me a chance to work with them on future projects. They’re going to have me do a 20-to-30 page short story to go into an anthology, and working with me to get my own series going.
