Anime on DVD sniffs out the latest ADV solicitations from Right Stuf:
Cromartie High School, Vol. #10 – $10.95 – 04/30/2007
Evangelion: Angelic Days (aka: Evangelion: Girlfriend of Steel 2) Vol. #04 – $9.99 – 03/31/2007
Maburaho Vol. #02 – $9.99 – 03/31/2007
(Cribbed directly because AoD eschews permalinks for these.) But where’s my fourth volume of Yotsuba&!? Nowhere to be seen. Down at the ADV manga website (last update: 9/20/04) there’s nothing but the sound of crickets chirping.

I remember seeing on the Tokyopop message boards that TP often licenses titles in three [which is why they released 6 Slayers novels, licensing 4-6 after 1-3 did well, and delaying a license on others until they had a viable release plan]
So mabye ADV only has the license to Yotsuba& Vol.1-3 [likewise, to Ray vol.1-3, which had vol.3 released last January 2006, but none since, and still has 4 more volumes left]. I hope they can manage to put out more someday. Some clarification of some sort from ADV would be appreciated, of course [ie- they have the license, they don’t have the license, they’re working on it, they had a release date set, etc].

That’s interesting! If it weren’t 10:30 at night, I’d try to figure out how many of their series stalled at volume 3. Hmmmm… OK, looking at the AoD chart, they put out one volume of 50 Rules for Teenagers, which I really liked (it was my first manwha), three volumes of Aria, four volumes of Azumanga Daioh, two volumes of Princess Tutu… Maybe they’re licensing them in threes, but they don’t seem to be releasing them that way. But me remembering stuff and looking it up at AoD is not exactly the scientific method. I do wish they would either publish the damn books or hand over the licenses to someone else though. Most of these are books that people actually want, and it’s a shame not to publish them.
Andre says
With 50 Rules for Teenagers, it could be it didn’t sell well enough to put out 2nd and 3rd volumes…… Aria would be one that didn’t extend past the 3rd though. And wasn’t Princess Tutu only 2 volumes?

Boy, the 3rd rated fan service manga Maburaho gets published while Yotsuba gets the shaft. Way to go ADV. If you’re talking Mahoraba I might have understood…
Maybe they are waiting for the Yotsubato! anime like the rest of Japan before publishing more volumes in order to drive sales. Most kiddies in these Merkin lands buy manga that’s tied in with anime. At least I hope that’s the case. Well, I for one can’t wait for the Orange and Lemon songs planned for Yotsubato! anime…

I’m not sure I buy the “3-volume” idea, at least for ADV. It doesn’t explain the year-long delay between Gunslinger Girl v. 1 and 2, with 3 coming a few months later, then many months upon months without v. 4. At least they finished Azumanga Daioh.
Sometimes I wish someone like Scholastic could end up with the license, add it to the Graphix line, and give it a serious push in the kids’ section.
Alex Scott says
Yotsuba&!, of course. Not Gunslinger Girl. Just wanted to make sure that was clear.

Someone needs to publisg Yotsuba&!?
It would be great if Scholastic or Del Ray could pick that series up. It’s my favorite manga EVER!
