Nightschool, Yokaiden, and new releases

The first volume of Svetlana Chmakova’s Nightschool is out, and I talk to Svet, Yen Press honcho Kurt Hassler, and editor JuYoun Lee about the creation of the book and changing attitudes about global manga in this week’s PWCW. There’s a little surprise for Queenie Chan fans in there too, so go check it out. Also at PWCW, Calvin Reid takes a look at a new series of Korean biographical manhwa for kids.

David Welsh picks the best of this week’s new releases at Precocious Curmudgeon.

Deb Aoki talks to Nina Matsumoto, creator of Yokaiden as well as the infamous Manga Simpsons, at About.com.

Translators Athena and Alethea Nibley discuss translating prose as opposed to comics in their latest column at Manga Life.

  1. Ed Sizemore says

Brigid, that was a great article. I have to say that Dramacon and Steady Beat are probably the two OEL books that made even the toughest critics rethink the viability of OEL.

  2. Thanks, Ed! I just wish that Off*Beat had caught on a little more—that was a great book. And Nina Matsumoto goes to the head of the sophomore class with Yokaiden!

  3. Ed Sizemore says

Unfortunately, I’m one of those that missed Off*Beat. I think at the time it was being published I was trying, and failing, to read everything Del Rey was publishing. I’m happy to hear that Yen is actually nurturing artists and hopefully more of the OEL cream of the crop will make it over to Yen. I’ll definitely be renewing my subscription to Yen Plus this year. I’ll actually be giving Nightschool as a gift to my niece and nephew. Their both big into manga now.

  4. The Manga Recon guest reviewer is Noah Fulmor. It shows on the front page, I didn’t think of how that wouldn’t show up on the RSS feed. Sorry!

  5. I am totally looking forward to reading Svetlana’s new series!
