Hassler speaks, new Gyakushu, spoil Labyrinth and win!

Tiamat’s Disciple has lots and lots of questions for Kurt Hassler, and Kurt responds in his usual upbeat fashion, capping it off with an exclusive bit of news: Yen will be releasing a new edition of Azumanga Daioh.

Lori Henderson has been reading her Previews, and she gives a rundown of upcoming all-ages titles, including a handful of interesting looking manga, at Good Comics for Kids. (Image from Ninja Baseball Kyuma!, coming soon from Udon.)

Dan Hipp says that vol. 3 of Gyakushu will be published, but it’s online only for now.

John Jakala has some work-related thoughts at Sporadic Sequential.

Jake Forbes has a contest at Gobblin.net: Make up your own spoiler for Return to Labyrinth 3 and win your own copy!

Margaret O’Connell continues her series on Japanese Valentines Day customs as reflected in manga at Sequential Tart.

At The Hooded Utilitarian, Noah Berlatsky pulls up an excerpt from Matt Thorn’s classic essay The Face of the Other, which tackles the question of “why manga characters don’t look Japanese” (short answer: They do, to Japanese people) and contrasts it with the decidedly non-Japanese models in Japanese Vogue (although he admits that’s a limited and biased sample). Interesting reading.

Remember how Kodansha was supposed to start a manga branch in the U.S.? And then they didn’t? LostPhrack hears from someone who heard something at a job fair in Akihabara… Well, it sounds plausible, anyway.

News from Japan: ANN reports that Kagami Yoshimizu, creator of Lucky Star, has a new manga series starting in the next issue of Kadokawa Shoten’s Comp Ace, which will go on sale on April 25. Click the link for a bunch of other new manga debuting in that issue and the ones that follow. Also, the Japanese edition of Robert Westall’s children’s novel Fathom Five features illustrations by Hayao Miyazaki. And speaking of Miyazaki, Gottsu-Iiyan treats us to a wee sample of his latest comic at The Eastern Edge.

Reviews: There’s lots of manga action over at Good Comics for Kids: Kate Dacey reviews the first volumes of three kid-friendly manga, BakeGyamon: Backwards Game, Fairy Idol Kanon, and Ninja Baseball Kyuma!, and Sabrina Fritz looks at two vintage manga, Miss Me? and vol. 1 of Cyborg 009. Carlo Santos delivers plenty of opinions in his latest Right Turn Only!! column at ANN.
