Comments

  1. I was just assigned two new series from Tokyopop after months and months of nothing but depressing news and slowed/halted releases of ongoing series. I think they’re pushing for a comeback indeed.

  2. Winning back fans is going to be very hard for them, and almost impossible to win me back. Every title of theirs i collected has been cancelled or put on long term hold.

A slew of new releases just wont cut it for me, they need to focus on their older titles, getting them back up and running again.

It’s also about time they got rid of Princess Ai, that’s what’s crippled TP. THey keep oon sinking more and more money into a dead franchise trying to revive it. It’s time they faced the facts that it was a good idea, but it fell flat and died. Cut their losses and move on.

Though they’ll never do that, since they’re still clinging to the delusion that Princess Ai will be their saving grace and make them mega bucks

  3. They won me back completely when they announced they’d be continuing my favourite series, VB Rose (though I’m the sort to remain optimistic/hopeful even when things look impossibly bad). I know it can be easy to be skeptical after going though delayed or cancelled titles, but I really want to support Tokyopop and keep buying new and continuing series as long as they keep publishing ’em. If some of the series I started reading never come back, I’ll be sad, but I’ll still be thankful I got to read part of those series at least. I’m not worried about series they’ve started/restarted lately being dropped again—I think Tokyopop has done what it needed to stabilize and narrow its focus, so hopefully from now on things will keep looking better!

TD, it’s clear that Tokyopop is struggling to stay alive. If titles aren’t selling well enough, it makes sense that they’d slow them down or put them on hold while they desperately push a slew of new releases to try and earn a little more capital for the company. If the new stuff sells, that increases the likelihood that they can afford to continue printing the older books that don’t sell as well. Tokyopop didn’t start “halting” series until the famous fall-out about a year ago, and before that, they published EVERYTHING to completion, no matter how crappily it sold, in order to respect the original material. What other companies did that, especially for as many years as Tokyopop did?

I can see why halting the old and pushing the new may lose them some old customers, but if they want to survive as a company, that may be their only choice. I really don’t think they’d be halting old books unless they really, really had to, considering the history of the company.
