Monday news roundup

ICv2 has more on Kurt Hassler’s move from Borders buyer to co-director of Yen Press, a new Hachette imprint focusing on graphic novels. There is a bit of sniping from an anonymous source (something that as a reporter, I would never allow into a story) and a much nicer quote from Kuo-Yu Liang of Diamond. At Precocious Curmudgeon, David Welsh rounds up the commentary from the blogosphere.

At Tokyopop, ChunHyang72 has another Tokyopop roundup, highlighting entries on Off*Beat, josei manga, and light novels, among others.

Deutsche Mangaka translates an interview with Mary Hildebrandt and David Boller, co-creators of Evergrey.

At Irresponsible Pictures, Pata checks out some Japanese fanart.

At Pop Culture Shock, Erin F. reviews Project X: 7-11. Yaoi 911 reviews Your Honest Deceit. At Anime on DVD, reviewer Sakura Eries likes the Viz version of Densha Otoko (Train Man) the best.

    Hey Brigid!

Alex from Yaoi 911 here. Thank you very much for the mention — but actually, the book is titled “Your Honest Deceit” not “Your Honest Defeat”, although you probably gathered from my review that I didn’t feel it was an unmitigated “Success”… ;-)

BTW, how’s your Yaoi exploration coming along? Did you ever get a chance to check out Challengers?

    Alex

  2. Brigid says:

Fixed it! I guess I was thinking ahead to Election Day. :)

I have not read Challengers because none of the bookstores near me carries it, and I am too lazy/busy to order it online. I did start reading Gakuen Heaven, and I like it fine so far, but the fact that it is about schoolboys weirds me out a bit. Oh, and I looooove Antique Bakery. But I still need to broaden my horizons a bit more.

  3. Higashi says:

You weren’t kidding about the sniping…I’m wondering, since when did nastily anonymous remarks begin to constitute news worthy material, especially in a comic genre that’s already seen it’s share of infighting?

  4. Brigid says:

I don’t know. Most journalists regard it as poor practice. Furthermore, the comment ICv2 chose to print was purely speculative and didn’t relate at all to the previous sentence. I write for small community newspapers, and I can’t see any of the editors I work with letting that through.

The criticism on Kethylia’s site is more pointed and the commenters use their LJ names, which can be easily matched with real names. So how hard would it have been for ICv2 to find someone to comment on the record?

Not that I’m looking for anyone to bash him—in my limited dealings with Kurt, he’s been a great guy. I just don’t like anonymous sources unless there’s a really good reason for them, and this doesn’t qualify.

  5. Julie says:

    Hi, Brigid!

I keep looking at Antique Bakery, but I keep putting it down again. What do you like about it? The art? The story? The characters?

    Thanks!

    Julie

  6. Brigid says:

Well, I have to admit I have only read volume 1, but I really thought the characters were interesting, and I enjoyed the interaction between them and the customers. And I loved the descriptions of the pastry. If you need more, David Welsh just gave ten reasons to like it in last week’s Flipped column.

Still, de gustibus and all that. I seem to be the only one in the blogosphere who didn’t like Love Roma, so I know how it feels.

  7. ed says:

(Looks around to make sure Jack and Jarred aren’t around)

Between, you and me Brig, I am not fanboy crazy about LoveRoma either. Fine, charming title in a quirky way but not for me.

    (RUNS!!!)
