New publisher on the horizon?

I almost missed this: Comic Book Resources reports that a company called Aurora has signed a distribution deal with Diamond. Aurora is owned by the Japanese publishing company Ohzora, and its titles include the Project X series and the Harlequin manga, according to Simon Jones, who, as always, has the background. (Link is NSFW, although a little tamer than usual this week.)

About Brigid Alverson

Brigid Alverson has been reading comics since she was 4. After earning an MFA in printmaking, she headed to New York to become a famous artist but ended up working with words instead of pictures, first as a book editor and later as a newspaper reporter. She started MangaBlog to keep track of her daughters’ reading habits and now covers manga, comics and graphic novels as a freelancer for School Library Journal, Publishers Weekly Comics Week, Comic Book Resources, the Barnes & Noble Sci-Fi & Fantasy Blog, and Robot 6. She also edits the Good Comics for Kids blog at School Library Journal. Now settled in the outskirts of Boston, Brigid is married to a physicist and has two daughters.

I’ve actually been consulting a bit for the folks at Ohzora regarding Aurora, and though I can’t tell you any of the details that I know, I think I can say that Aurora will be doing more interesting and innovative things than one might imagine just looking at what they’ve been doing in Japan. It certainly won’t be simply translating their Japanese stuff into English. There are some really bright and well-informed people running that company.

I remember receiving a “invitation card” to Aurora Publishing’s “launch party” sometime last year (can’t remember when), not sure why they didn’t make a big deal out of it though.

    Tantalizing hints!

It’s interesting to see more Japanese publishers looking to be directly involved the the global manga market. The entertainment industry, manga included, is a huge export for Japan but sometimes it seems like Japanese publishers just aren’t interested in capitalizing on it.

    500,000 yen – that’s like $27, right?
