News flash: Yen Gets Yotsuba

Yen Press has just announced that they have picked up the license for volume 6 of Yotsuba&! Volume 6 will be released in September 2009. Check back for more details later.

ETA: To be clear, Yen has picked up the license for the series going forward and will be releasing subsequent volumes every few months. I believe the series is up to vol. 9 in Japan. Yen Press honcho Kurt Hassler said that they would be looking to pick up the license for the older volumes as well.

  8. This was the only surprise in Yen’s pick up’s. Though i have to admit im surpeised they didn’t pick up the entire series, given how hard it can be to get the early volumes. Though i suppose they’re just trying to finish the series of for fans.

That said this is the nail in the coffin of ADV manga, and them accepting it. They’ve stubbornly held onto it for ages saying they were going to release, and now they’ve given up

They only licensed volume 6 and nothing else. Since there are eight tankoubon released in Japan, this would seem to be a water-testing moment for Yen. If sales of this single volume are good, then they can justify licensing volume 7 & 8 (and 9 when it comes out). They might also be able to justify licensing 1-5 again. So the key here is for people to buy the manga and ensure sales are great so Yen gets more. ^_^

@AstroNerdBoy: Nope, I talked to Kurt Hassler after the panel and they have all the volumes going forward. Sorry, I had no internet access when the news broke and had to dictate the post to my husband in a crowded press room. I’ll edit the post to be clearer.
